Fredag 07.08.09: Nordic Evening at Ytste Skotet

klassebildet

Friday 07.08.09 was the last day for the NOVU participants. No one knew what the day would bring only that it would be a lot of walking. The youths took a bus from Latinskolen to ?Kokarsteinen? where they had lunch. The participants where impressed by the fantastic view from the restaurant.
After a short lunch the bus trip continued to a place called Dyrkorn where all watches and phones had to be left in a box and taken care of by the leaders. The youths were going back to a moldy lifestyle.
From Dyrkorn small boats took the participants over to Ytste Skotet, a farm located on a mountaincliff in Storfjorden. The youths walk/climbed up to the farm from the boat.  After arriving someone went swimming in the ice cold water. The youths where divided into different groups, some learned how to use the saw, some made bread, some worked with handcraft and some picked berry.
Afterwards Idar Skotte told stories about Ytste Skotet, Eva Mørkeset translated into English.  Idar Skotte grew up on the farm and told that in the winter time the snow could be two meters high and the family was unable to get out.
When the guided tour was finished the youths went inside the farm for dinner. After eating the youths learned some old, typical Norwegian dances. After the dance the satisfied and happy participants walked all the way down to the boats and went back to Latinskolen by bus again.  It had been an excellent Nordic evening.

Torsdag: The Maritimt choir

dsc03381

dsc03384

The choir trained in Arbeideren. They practised mainly three songs: Heaven by Bryan Adams, Every breath you take by the Police and then an African song. They also improvised music as well as adding rythm and movement.

Árný Arnarsdóttir, 17 from Iceland
dsc03387 copy

Àrný chose the choir because she really loves singing and would like to learn more. She sings in a school choir in Akureyri. She likes these songs they have been singing because they aren´t boring, just normal pop songs but she liked the African song the best.

Harley Foged, 18 from Danmark

Harley regretted not choosing the choir last year in NOVU and so she decided to choose it this year. She has also sung in her school choir but she has never performed on the street before. She really likes the songs but she thinks the improvacing is the most fun. She also likes the singing teacher a lot because she has alot of energy.

Riku Järvinen, 18 from Finland

Riku has been in a choir for ten years. He likes the songs very much because everyone knows them. He thinks the most entertaining song is Every breath you take.

At the end of the day the choir performed beautifully at Brosundet.

Torsdag: Watersports

dsc03301

dsc03344

In watersport the NOVU teenagers get a chance to try things like a kneeboard, canoes and a tube, just to name a few. There were three leaders who helped with the equipment. This took place in a beautiful beach in Giske. Altough the sun didn´t shine the air was warm so it was good to be able to jump into the cold sea.

We were able to talk to a few teenagers right before lunch.

Charlotte Gaba, 16 from Danmark

dsc03374

Charlotte had only tried the tube but she wanted to try the kneeboard as well. She had never tried anything like this before. She was scared at first but it ended up being a lot of fun.

Bech, 20 from Danmark
dsc03376 copy

Bech had tried the tube and the kneeboard and she liked both very much. This wasn´t her first time trying watersports. She loves everything extreme. She said she wasn´t scared more excited.

Natalie Skaaden, 17 from Norway
dsc03378

Natalie had tried the tube and the canoe but she had tried canoe and surfboarding before. She was a little scared in her second trip in the tube becauce they went very fast, but despite of that the tube was still her favorite.

Everybody enjoied themselves and were looking forward to the rest of the day.

Torsdag: A day on an island

img1992

37 participants joined the day activity "The tree boat" where they spent the day on the little island called "Hundsvær"

Christer Lundberg Nes is the leader for the day mission "The tree boat". 37 teenagers have chosen this activity and are ready to go on board the boats.
- There are three small tree boats and one boat that is a bit bigger. The participants will row out to the little island "Hundsvær" and there we will spend the day.
Christer says "Hundsvær" is also called "Tyskholmen" after the war, but the original Viking name is "Hundsvær".
- It's a very exciting island and also quite near to the city so that's why we chose it.

After all the participants had arrived to the island, Christer and the other adults showed the teenagers how to chop wood. The barbeque can then begin. They all learnt how to make bread  using saltwater and flour.

img2013

img2019

Benjamin Kofod Nielsen (17), Rasmus Søndergaard Bendixen (17) and Jeff Hejsthalin Foged (16) from Denmark think a day on an island is very fun.
- I have Viking roots so I enjoy the boats, says Jeff.
Rasmus chose this activity because he loves the ocean.
- My uncle has a boat that we go on sometimes, but I have never rowed a boat like we did today. It was very cool.
- I think it's just nice to get together. I don't know if will take a swim today. The weather is nice but the water seems so cold.

img1912

Christer Lundberg Nes says that after they have finished eating they all are going into the woods to make bridges of ropes.
- We're going to play some games like "jungle catch" and just have a good time.

Some boat-tips:
  • Don't stand in the boat
  • Use a lifewest
  • If you want to switch oars, don't stand up in the boat at the same time
  • When you row, use your whole body
  • Follow the one who rows in the front

Onsdag: The sea as a creative source

In this workshop the NOVU-teenagers were split up into three groups. Every group had to make a performance based on a piece of music and objectes. In the end these performances made up one play. All the groups used wests as customs.

Group 1

dsc03161

dsc03234

They got a very dramatic music and umbrellas to use as props. They decided to make their part about, when the pirates come to attack. They used their piece of music when the pirates attacked the ship. They got the idea of the performance all together.

Group 2

dsc03209

They got happier music than group one and a picture of a couple as a prop. Their part was about different stages of a relationship. This was also a group effort.

Group 3

dsc03195

They got a very flat piece of music and megafone. They didn´t like their music. It was hart to come up with a idea but they worked it out together. In this part they play people on a ship that then dronws.

At the end of the day they performed the play at Brosundet. About a hundred people came to see the show both locals and tourists. People seemd to enjoy it and there was alot of applaus.

Onsdag: Underwater photography

In the underwater photography the teenagers began with finding a wetsuit as well as snorkels and glasses. Then they dove into the cold water and tok pictures.

grupp

Good to know when you are taking pictures unterwater:

-You need wetsuit, flippers, a snorkel, glasses and of course a camera.

-Make sure your glasses are clean.

-One of the important rules is to stay together when you are diving.

-Remember to use the light and stay close to your subject.

 Anna Järvinen, 17 from Finland
anna

Anna said "It wasn´t easy to wear the wetsuit. It´s like another skin. This was a good opportunity, that is to mix together diving and photography. She wanted to get a  picture of when a fish jumps to the water."

Thorsteinn Máni Òskarsson, 18 from Island
gisli

Thorsteinn said "It was easy to wear the wetsuit. He hadn´t done this before and he hoped that it would be be fun. He wanted to take a picture of his friend Gisli and also of a wolffish."

After lunch they worked on their pictures on a computer.

Onsdag: Impressive meals from the ocean

Erik Olofgørs and Linnéa Ohman were two of the 23 participants who spent the day learning how to cook all kinds of fish dishes from the very beginning. They even caught their own fish!

erik

It was a windless day in Ålesund when the participants on the day mission "Alt godt fra havet" arrived at Slinningen. The sun was shining and the sky was clear. Some of the participants decided to start the day with a nice but cold swim.

- I wanted to go on this day mission because fish is a local product for Ålesund. I just want to have a nice time, cook some nice meals and maybe get a little tan, smiles Erik Olofgørs (19) from Sweden, who has just gotten out of the water.
Linnéa Ohamn (17) from Sweden has also been looking forward to the cooking.
- I think it's cool to see the process from a living fish to a cooked meal. "
rkrensning

Both of the adolescences went on the fishing trip yesterday.
- We got lots of fish. In Västerås, where I live you'll catch like one fish and that is uneatable. We were 12-13 people on the boat and we all got fish. I didn't think it was grouse to rinse the fish. I felt a bit bad for it, but we're humans and we need to eat.
Linnéa thought it was a bit awful to cut the head off the fish.
- But it was a very cool tour. It was awesome to get bite all the time. That was fun.

linnea

Both Linnéa and Erik like fish.
- My favorite  is mackerel, says Linnéa, but Erik?s favorite is zander.
- I really like to cook but we?ll see today if I?m a good chef.

Elin Margret Hallgrimsdottir is an Icelandic politician who has come to watch the adolescences.
- I think this is a very exiting task. All the Nordic lands have a strong connection with the ocean. A lot of the Icelandic economy is controlled by the fishermen.
Elin also thinks it?s important for young people to get to know the Nordic culture.
- Today adolescences get lots of things handed to them, so I think it?s important that they learn to not take things for granted and to do things themselves.

elin

After about four hours of preparation a six course meal was served.
- I thought it was fun to make the filet. We have learned a lot today. Like how to make different fish dishes, says Linnéa.
Erik is also satisfied with the meals today.
- I thought all the food was good and the fishcakes were really great. I think this has been a very nice day mission. I thought it was better than the activities we did yesterday. We got to try more different things.

Tirsdag: The city- from a photographers view

Some of the participants in NOVU have today been at the work mission "Where the photographer stand" where they had to compare old and new photos of the town.

2

Birgitta Bjarney Thorleifsdóttir (19) and Gisli Björgvin Gislason (19) from Island have been on the mission called "Where did the photographer stand". The mission was to meet at "Fjellstua" and get a photo that had been taken a long time ago, and then find the place and take a new photo.
- I am interested in photographing so that's why I chose this activity today, says Gisli.
- I didn`t know what it was so I just chose it for fun. But I haven`t done so much, because I couldn`t go up to "Fjellstua" because I had strained my but muscle, so when I found my group later they were already finished, says Birgitta.

3

4

Ole Jacob Skottun is the leader of the group and works at "Sunnmøre museum".
- To enjoy this mission you should be a bit interested in the community, and also in the development of the city.
He says that Gro Dalen from the art school and Ingvild Wille from "Sunnmøre museum" has found and chose the pictures but he is the group leader.
- We should perhaps have had more photos because some photos were easier than others to find, so some finished a bit early.

5

Malin Hedberg (18) from Sweden also chose "Where did the photographer stand".
- I chose this activity because I wanted to learn something about the town and see some more of it. It`s cool to see how much it has changed.
After the five groups had taken the photos they went to "Sunnmøre museum" to look at the old and new photos and discuss the changes in the city.
Malin thinks this was more fun than to take the photos.
- It`s exciting to compare the town from how it is today and how it looked like before. I think this was more interesting then to actually take the photos because we finished really quickly. We should have gotten more old photos because then we could have seen more of the city.

Tirsdag: Do you want to do your own orgament?

We will tell you how you can do it and how NOVU-teenagers made it!

dsc03048c

We went to visit the wallpainting group in Ålesund kunstfagskole. In this workshop they learned the basic technique of painting and patterns.

At first they made their own patterns with a compass on a piece of paper. They then drew the patterns on a plasticpaper which they then cut out with a knife. In the end they painted the patterns on a wall.

Some teenagers knew how they were going to do their patterns but the rest of them needed some more time to think. Everyone made beautiful patterns and had a lot of fun.

Casper Christiansen, 17 from Danmark
dsc03055

Casper hadn´t done wallpainting before but he likes drawing. He says that he got the idea of his pattern from listening to music. He expected this workshop to be more freepainting.

Ellinor Grapp, 17 from Sweden
dsc03037

Ellinor hadn´t done this before either but she knew the technique. She didn´t have any expectations coming in "It was nice to come and paint". She hadn´t got any idea what kind of a pattern she wanted to do, she just did what came next to mind.

Bent Erik Mynoll, from Norway, was one of the two teachers in wallpainting workshop.
Bent or Bentus is an artist who mostly does fresco painting but also decorations and konservatore art. He started painting very young and when he was 14 he started artschool. When we asked him why art is so important to him he said "This is what I like to do. It´s cool and I love it!" The best thing in the wallpainting is that everyone can do it he said. You don´t have to be a good painter and you can show your creativities. The walls that they painted will be for display in the artschool the next few months.
